Residents took part in a seaside themed sensory namaste session.
Hazel End Care Home provides residential and dementia care for all residents. The lifestyle team work extremely hard to provide activities and experiences which are suitable, enjoyable, and work to encourage the well-being of our residents.
Residents living with dementia can find certain activities or events distressing which can bring on anxiety, here at Hazel End the Lifestyle Team have introduced Sensory Sessions by which our residents experience stimulation from soothing music and familiar scents which both help reduce agitation and encourage relaxation. Thus, encouraging the overall wellbeing of the resident.
This week residents were transported to the seaside, peaceful waves, visual stimulation, videos, smells of salt and vinegar chips, the feeling of chips wrapped in newspaper, tasting the chips, toes in sand and salty water, all sparked memories of holidays to the seaside and swimming in the sea.
Residents were also treated to hand and foot massages to further encourage feelings of calmness and relaxation.
Sensory stimulation arouses one of more of the five senses, the goal of this is to evoke positive feelings, encouraging exploration is a safe, age-appropriate environment. This can be used as a treatment for Alzheimer’s, Brain Injuries, Chronic pain, and other forms of Dementia. Providing positive outcomes on mood, self-esteem, and well-being.
One resident commented “It smells just like the seaside, it smells amazing, I can smell the salt and vinegar chips.”
Another commented “I love it in here, it is so relaxing.”
With other residents commenting about memories and family holidays, to English seaside resorts including Clacton.
The Lifestyle Team have made a conscious effort to include sensory activities in their monthly activity planner, to continue encouraging the well-being and happiness of all our residents.
