Each week we set up in the Cinema Room making good use of the comfortable chairs and get our bodies moving. Focusing on strengthening and stretching out all the different parts of the body that are an important part of the resident’s day to day routines.
Every exercise has been thoughtfully thought out by Charlotte and is demonstrated to the residents in a very clear way, meaning that everyone can participate and take advantage. Charlotte also explains what part of the body the exercise is focusing on and how it will improve movement for a specific day to day task.
Residents started with warming up their feet and ankles by marching on the spot in a seated position. This exercise really engaged our core stability as well as mobilising the lower body. Lifestyle Coordinator Emily said ‘It was great to see everyone marching and getting their knees really high. Some residents even surprised themselves with how able they were to get their legs moving. They felt confident to push themselves as they knew they were safe in a comfortable armchair.”
Working their way up the body, moving every inch from head to toe the residents finished with a big, long stretch. One resident said she could really feel a deep stretch in the back of her leg and was keen to challenge herself to see how far she could go. This resident went on to say that she had really enjoyed herself and that she would love to keep this up at least once a week to start seeing a difference each time.
Another resident had said that she used to suffer with trigger finger and has now learnt some easy and simple exercises that she can do anywhere to prevent her fingers getting stiff again.
We were given different levels of each exercise so that for those who were more able and wanted to have something a little harder to try they had the option.
This is a fantastic activity for residents with all different levels of strength and mobility. It’s great for the mind and body. We look forward to our 11am sessions each week with the lovely Charlotte, thank you!
